Environmental Impact Assessment of Explosive Remnants of War in Northern Sri Lanka - Final Report

_______

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report on Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) in Northern Sri Lanka, carried out by Dr. Devaka K. Weerakoon on assignment for The HALO Trust and Lanka Environment Fund, investigates the environmental repercussions of conflict and landmine clearance, compounded by climate change challenges in the region.

This study focuses on understanding the long-term environmental impacts of ERW contamination, including the effects of landmine removal on local ecosystems and biodiversity. It includes a detailed ecological assessment of both coastal and inland ecosystems, conducting a habitat suitability analysis and evaluating the challenges posed by climate change.

The EIA also identifies necessary remediation activities and proposes targeted environmental remedial measures for the restoration of ecosystems affected by ERW contamination. Recommendations for future interventions in sustainable land rehabilitation and ecosystem restoration are drawn from the findings, aiming to inform the development of effective strategies for recovery.

This EIA report serves as a crucial resource for guiding future land rehabilitation and restoration strategies, ensuring environmentally responsible clearance operations, and supporting long-term ecosystem recovery in Northern Sri Lanka.
